“So we’re possibly going to have to fight a god, and that’s on top of learning how to use an impossible magic. Why exactly am I following you people again?”
Jo didn’t sound happy. To be fair, in my short time knowing her, she didn’t often sound happy, but she seemed even less happy than normal.
“Because we know the best cake shop in town?” I suggested.
She stared at her plate, then shut her eyes. “You honestly consider that a worthy answer.” Then she sighed and took another bite.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
I think she had meant to, but she was too busy moaning in pleasure, so I took that as my victory.
It was currently thirty minutes after midnight. In some ways we’d actually gotten a lot of information, but unfortunately there wasn’t actually a lot we could do with it yet. Reizner couldn’t directly help us, and although we theoretically knew what to do to solve the problem, the application of it was out of our reach.
Kevaen had explained Reizner was trying to use his powers to keep the town safe, but it was stretching his powers to the breaking point. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep the werewolf out of the city proper, as he had so far. Kevaen himself had some work to do on that front, to organize additional guard rotas, but had promised he’d speak to us again shortly.
So, for the moment, we’d decided to talk through what we knew.
“Do we believe the backstory?” Sara asked to start off the discussion.
Jo’s answer was immediate and forceful. “No.”
I was less certain. “I’m… not sure if I do, though it does at least seem possible.”
“I keep getting stuck on the name Mordred,” said Sara thoughtfully, adding another pinch of sugar to her tea. “I think I’d have an easier time accepting the story if the name of the high god was just different.”
“It does seem incongruous with everything else,” I said, tapping a finger on my chin. “I checked, and I definitely remembered right - in the stories of Camelot, Mordred was a bad guy.”
“It depends on the story in question, but Mordred is usually depicted as related to Arthur, sometimes as a son, sometimes a nephew. Most stories do portray him wounding or even killing Arthur, usually through treachery. A small number do depict this treachery in a more sympathetic light than others.”
We just stared at Jo, who threw up her hands.
“I know things, ok? Bite me.”
“Anyway,” I said, turned back to my plate, “the name seems out of place, but I have no idea what it means.”
“I think Ted was going to look into it tonight,” said Sara, sipping her tea. “Maybe he’ll find something.”
I shrugged. Eventually something had to go right, so why not? “Ok, so another topic - what do we do about the god that hates us?”
“You mean, hates you two.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, thank you for the clarification Jo, your contribution is appreciated.”
She just drank her coffee - philistine - and sat back looking satisfied.
